Charlotte Martin's way of doing music business

Charlotte Martin a charismatic and funny entertainer and she is drop dead gorgeous. Even though musically she is not exactly in my field, I have been enjoying each of her albums a lot, since I fell in love with her first EP "In Parethesis". I purchased that album after she opened for Psychedelic Furs in 2003 and did not touch it for two more years.
What impresses me the most about her, is how smart she works her career. Most bands and artists try moving along the econmony of scale: amass as many fans as possible and serve them via mass distribution of CDs, videos and shows in venues as big as they can fill. That does not mean that they don't love their fans, but they cannot deal with the individual fan if they have to keep their eyes focused on the masses. My beloved band Warpaint, for example, did not take te opportunity to directly interact with their fans, even in a tiny venue like The Studio at Webster Hall. They disappeared in the back of the stage like U2 would do. Of course that's how the music industry likes it and how you might become rich and famous.
But album sales are going down and live show attendance is also slowing. The competition is huge, which leaves only a short moment of hype for the individual artist. That's why I find Charlotte Martin's approach so enjoyable: she does not build on hype (if there ever was hype around her person, I missed it), but on a close relationship with her fans. She plays small venues, interacts with her audience during the show and afterwards she talks to her fans and hugs everyone who wants to. That makes you feel like a friend of hers and not just somebody who consumes her art.
And now she tries to break out of the traditional album cycle and offers a fan club subscription, including additional music, videos and other information. That lets her fans participate even closer in her work. I believe that is a good way of the future in the music industry.
